The story began in early April when 68-year-old Michael Hart was clearing out his late father’s workshop. The coin was quickly identified by several forum members as a rare 1909-S VDB Lincoln Wheat Penny — a key date in American numismatics and highly sought after by collectors. Only 484,000 of these coins were ever minted in San Francisco, and even fewer remain in circulation or private hands today.
Despite its modest face value of one cent, this specific penny is known to fetch thousands of dollars depending on its condition. In mint or near-mint condition, some have sold for over $60,000 at auction.
What made Hart’s discovery even more interesting was the condition of the coin. Though it had seen some wear, initial assessments suggest it retains strong details — including the iconic “V.D.B.” initials on the reverse, representing Victor David Brenner, the coin’s designer. These initials were controversially removed from the design shortly after release, which is partly what makes the original so rare.

Numismatic expert Laura Thompson from the American Coin Association noted, “Finding a 1909-S VDB penny is always a big deal. But discovering one in such a random location — a paint can, no less — is practically unheard of. It raises all kinds of questions about how it ended up there and how long it had been hidden.”
Some believe the coin may have been placed there decades ago for safekeeping, perhaps by Hart’s father or grandfather who might’ve known its value. Others think it was simply forgotten in the shuffle of time, mixed among nuts and bolts until it became just another mystery item buried in a garage corner.

Though Hart has received appraisal offers ranging from $5,000 to $20,000, he says he’s not in a hurry to sell. “It’s more than just the money,” he said. “It feels like a time capsule. My dad never mentioned it, but now it’s a part of his story too.”
